Common SEM Mistakes
Those who are new to search engine marketing can easily and accidentally make costly mistakes that not only break their bank, but also their chances of ever gaining any additional business with their campaign. Below we will outline some things that are among the most common mistakes which result in a failed SEM campaign. Some of them contain subjects which will be addressed later on, but being aware of them prior to beginning your campaign is crucial. Read through them, and don't go any further with your search engine marketing untill you have done your homework and are confident that you won't make any of these mistakes.
1.) Failure to have an organized website that is functional, informative, easy to use, and directs visitors to take action.
2.) Failure to identify your target market. You don't have to be a whiz, but you need general demographic knowledge of your ideal customer.
3.) Failure to identify and adress the correct locations. This all depends on your product or services, however if you aren't targeting a profitable geographic area or if you're targeting the wrong one alltogether, you won't see any benefit from SEM.
4.) Failure to write effective ads. If your ads are written to your standards instead of the consumer standards, you're losing out. Know your customers and how they think.
5.) Failure to properly budget. Your spending needs be planned so that you can continue to run your listings all month. Consistency is important. If you spend too much in the first week, you won't be able to continue the next three weeks. This is very important.
6.) Failure to track your success and failure to make changes. Depending on what method of SEM you use and which search engine you decide to market with, you will have certain tools to measure your success. Maybe there are hundreds of people clicking on your ads, yet you are getting no sales. This implies that first and foremost, there is an issue with either your websites usability. People are not getting the right info, they are not finding it easy to purchase your product or service, or your call to action is ineffective. Tracking your campaigns and their shortcomings so you can pinpoint problems and improve those areas is crucial.
