Metatags and More
Now that your copy has been modified to include your keyphrases, there are a few last steps to execute in order to complete your website optimization. When a webcrawler visits your site to scan the content, it looks at more than just the copy. It analyzes page titles, metadata, descriptions and site navigation. If all of these are uniform, your site will be well optimized for search engines.
Metadata is information located within the html code of a webpage. It gives the webcrawler information about the site and it's content prior to the webcrawler reading the copy. There are multiple meta-tags, each representing something specific. A description of each is located below.
- Meta-Keywords: These list the keywords or phrases that are used within the copy of the corresponding page.
- Meta-Description: This is the short description that will show up under your listing in the SERPs.
- Meta-Title: This information is the title of your page which will show up at the very top of your browser window.
Below, I will give an example of each of the above using the previous scenario of a Designer Clothing Store.
A proper meta-keywords tag would be the following, using each keyphrase seperated by commas.
- shelby one designer clothing, designer clothing miami, armani clothing miami, miami clothing store, designer clothing botique, designer clothing store miami, miami designer clothing
A Proper meta-descritption will state you business name and also include some of your keyphrases. Below is a great example
- Welcome to Shelby One Clothing Boutique. We are a leading Designer Clothing Store and the sole retailers of Armani Clothing in Miami.
A proper meta-title would include the business name and keyphrases.
- Shelby One Clothing Boutique | Miami Designer Clothing Store | Armani Store Miami
As you can see, all of the meta-tags hold the same information as the copy. Now your site will be completely uniform and webcrawlers will easily be able to understand what your content is about. Depending on the tools used to build or maintain your website, methods to enter the metadata into the html will vary. We wont get into all of that here, however there are multiple resources on the web that provide how-tos for the inclusion of meta-data based on your web design software.
